Small
Business Advice
If you are a small business
owner, I have a few very important tips about your website.
These are absolutely critical to protect your company from
potential disaster. Trust me on this, I ran a small web
design and hosting company for 6 years and I have seen first
hand what can happen.
1. Register your domain
name yourself. Do not allow your web designer or hosting
company to do this. I have seen domain names lost forever
because the registration fees weren't paid and the business
owner didn't know about it until it was too late. If you
don't have control of your domain name, get it now. I

2. Don't host your site
with your web designer. You should be in control of your
website. Take a little time and learn about how the process
works. Contact a huge web hosting company. The larger
companies usually have better support and infrastructure.

3. Keep a backup copy of
your website. Ask your web designer to provide you with all
of the files (on CD) used to create your site. Then ask for
an updated version every 3 to 6 months. If you have control
of your web hosting (see Tip #2) you should log into your
site and download a backup copy of the site at least
monthly, but more often if you make frequent changes to your
site.
