The
Greatest Sci-Fi Story of all Time - Dune Dune
by Frank Herbert, the 1966 science fiction novel, may be one
of the greatest stories of all-time. It is the undisputed
all-time best selling sci-fi novel. If you haven't heard;
the story has been continued. Actually Brian Herbert (son of
Frank Herbert) and best selling author Kevin J. Anderson
have written 10 new Dune Novels, six prequels and the final
chapters in the Dune series.
Frank Herbert wrote six
novels; Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of
Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune. His son
completed a trilogy of prequels that immediately precede the
original book, Dune. If you loved Dune, the Prequels are a
must. In fact if you only thought Dune was a fair story, you
should read the prequels. Brian Herbert and Kevin J.
Anderson have improved on the style of Frank Herbert's Dune.
Their story telling style is much easier to read than the
original Dune books. The audio versions of these are highly
recommended,
House Atreides
House Harkonnen
House Corrino
Also, don't miss the
Legends of Dune series. These novels take place a thousand
years before the original Dune book.
The Butlerian Jihad
The Machine Crusade
The Battle of Corrin
If you want to get back
into this awesome series, start with the original Dune book.
You can find a copy at you local bookstore or purchase on on
eBay. The audiobook version is also available, but only on
eBay as it is no long being published. But be aware that it
is quite rare and you should expect to pay a premium price
for it.
Dune is also available on
VHS and DVD. The original Dune movie from 1984 has recently
been remastered. The extended edition has deleted scenes and
an alternate ending. But I prefer the Sci-Fi Channel version
from 2000, it is a far better version. Sci-Fi also released
a Children of Dune DVD. This is a video version of Dune
Messiah and Children of Dune.
Note: Dune Messiah is
without a doubt the worst of the Dune series. It is unbearably
hard to read. It is really terrible. I know people that gave
up on the Dune series after trying to read this book. If you
are a diehard Dune fan, read it, otherwise skip it. Someday
I will write a summary of Dune Messiah, it will only take
about three paragraphs. Children of Dune is so much better
you will wonder if Frank had overdosed on Spice when he
wrote Messiah.
Latest Update:
Brian and Kevin have completed the final chapter in the Dune
series and added a couple of very good stories interweaved
around Children of Dune and Dune Messiah.
